Holmes Hollow
What's new
May 2012

Well, April was no picnic this year. This has to be the craziest year on record. From a balmy March, we've had a roller-coaster month. We planted 2200 Christmas trees, many of which had already broken bud. We were worried about drought at the time and decided to start watering. Fortunately, the rains came and saved the day. But that was followed by freezing temperatures, 18 to low 20s. Of course, that killed all the new growth on the little trees. Then we had 3" of heavy wet snow, which broke a few branches, but no major damage. I had emptied the hoophouse to give the plants some rain, air and sunlight, but soon had to put everything back in as another freeze came. Three morning with temps in the low 20s, killed the new leaves on my Stewartia, Calycanthus and Katsuras. I'm glad April is over, but what will May bring?
